The full expansion of the eight kilometer long Gleinalm Tunnel of the A9 Pyhrn Highway includes the construction of the second tube and the general renovation of the existing tube. In addition to the extensive general renovation of the old tube from 1978 and the conversion to state-of-the-art tunnel safety, the tunnel portals including gallery were also newly constructed.
The design of the new portals resulted from a competition won in 2012 by fasch&fuchs.architekten. The second tunnel tube was opened to traffic in 2017 after 4 years of construction, and ASFINAG subsequently refurbished the existing tube. Since the end of 2019, motorists now have access to a technically state-of-the-art twin-tube tunnel.
