The starting point of the constructional remodelling of the Murat Karamanci Student Centre was the question, which – minimal, intelligent and careful – interferences can be performed in order to turn a filigree load carrying construction of a 1980s tennis hall into a modern student centre. A new glass shell, shaded by expanded metal elements, is being supported by a lightweight pipe-shaped load-bearing structure. The existing steel structure of the hall, which did not have an ideal size for the original loads to begin with, was reinforced through subtle and selective supporting structures. All new bearing elements have colour accents. It takes a lot of engineering in order to achieve as few interventions as possible.
