Based on the design by Atelier Thomas Pucher—the winning entry in a two-stage, EU-wide architectural competition—one of Europe’s most modern urban hospitals is being built in Vienna. By 2039, Vienna’s First Municipal Hospital will be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility through a combination of refurbishment and new building.

At the heart of the modernization is the construction of a new central hospital that brings all medical services under one roof. The renovation and adaptation of the historic and, in some cases, landmark-protected buildings will take place simultaneously.

The entire project, with a gross floor area of 145,000 m², will be carried out in several construction phases while the hospital remains in operation.

The new clinic’s sustainability strategy provides for an energy supply based on district heating and geothermal energy and is optimally complemented by green roofs, spacious courtyards, and the wind permeability of the entire building complex.
