The new public university building, the Graz Center of Physics, is located in downtown Graz in the immediate vicinity of the Karl-Franzens-University. The majority of the GCP’s university laboratories, which require special vibration protection, are housed in the two basement floors of the nine-story building.

Large, column-free spaces on the ground floor allow for spacious access areas and the arrangement of lecture halls. The upper floors house seminar rooms, additional laboratories and offices, as well as a catering area.

The roof terrace, made possible by a stepped recess in the building on the third floor, will be a publicly accessible urban terrace with trees and intensive greenery.

The structural concept of the GCP is largely derived from the ground floor. The access areas located there, and in particular the lecture halls, define correspondingly large zones in which no structural supports can be placed. This makes it necessary to design the structure in such a way that spans of up to 27 m can be spanned in an cost-effective manner.

This span is achieved with multi-story steel truss beams.

Planned completion: 2030.
