Opening of the Gleinalm tunnel
The full extension of the eight kilometre long Gleinalm tunnel of the A9 Pyhrn motorway included the construction of the second tube and the general renewal of the existing tube.
In addition to the extensive general refurbishment of the old tube from 1978 and the conversion to state-of-the-art tunnel safety, the tunnel portals with gallery were also newly constructed.
The design of the new portals emerged from a competition won by fasch&fuchs.architekten in 2012. The second tunnel tube was opened to traffic in 2017 after a construction period of 4 years, and ASFINAG subsequently renovated the existing tube. Since the end of 2019, motorists have been able to use a state-of-the-art twin-tube tunnel.
