Making Of – A wooden music band for Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan

The next World Expo will take place in Osaka, Japan. In around six months, from April 13th to October 13th, 2025, the international pavilions of EXPO 2025 Osaka will be open to the public with their exhibition contributions on the theme of “Designing Future for Our Lives”. Together with BWM Designers & Architects, we were able to win the two-stage realization competition for the design of the Austrian pavilion.

The spiral sculpture on the façade of the pavilion, which can be seen from afar – an oversized band of notes made from a construction of wooden slats screwed together – will be shipped directly from Graf Holzbau’s workshops in Horn to Osaka in Japan.

The construction of the loop follows the principle of “screwing instead of gluing”, meaning that the individual components of the spiral can be completely dismantled and reassembled elsewhere. This allows the components to be recycled even after Expo 2025.
