Square design and monument in Göpfritz by the artist Maruša Sagadin

The artistic idea for the memorial with which Maruša Sagadin won the invited competition is dedicated to the commemoration of 16 volunteer fire brigades that were disbanded in the course of the municipal departures between 1938 and 1941 in the area of the today’s Allentsteig military training area.

The architectural object encloses the square in front of the Göpfritz fire brigade on the two sides of the street and becomes a stand with an additional intermediate step. On the surfaces of the object facing the street there are imprints of different materials. Three sculptural objects – boots, fire department helmet and water hose on the red- and orange-coloured concrete steps – refer in abstract form to the fire department.
